Flourishing with Sensory Processing Sensitivity
My brain, a Go Pro
An errand to the grocery store can bring to mind deep queries of why I’m alive, images of an afterlife, and memories of connection between myself and my parents. I carry this complexity wherever I am. Yesterday I drove past a wheat field and pondered who had planted, how long it had taken and if the workers felt camaraderie while working. (don’t most people drive to the grocery store thinking of a store list?) My brain is a Go-Pro that takes it all in: wide angled, detailed, layered and why it’s there in the first place. It’s this reason I have to plan moments of pure being. Moments of being present and not reflecting, not planning, not evaluating or taking in new information. This requires awareness and choices to stop, catch my breath and if I can, close my eyes. One of my 400 questions to Elaine has been: what is the most important thing for highly sensitive people? Her answer: to access the deepest place of quiet within themselves, “to seek the deep beyond the deep, for in those moments one can truly find rest.” She has found Transcendental Meditation to be most effective at accessing this space. Last April I became a student myself and have not regretted it. The technique is easy with great impact. That each of us have our own ways to discover this place is glorious.
